Philosophy
Education is a never-ending process in which each student can learn, including those with special needs. Each student with a disability deserves a free appropriate education in his/her least restrictive environment. It takes a strong support team to help provide the best education for students with disabilities. Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills are key to having a successful team which provides a safe and nurturing environment conducive to learning. Each educator serving the student should have the appropriate knowledge to meet individual student needs through accommodation and modification of required work. An established team should come together to compose an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) to fit the needs of each student with disabilities. It is up to the team to implement the plan in order for the student to experience successful learning.
The student’s cognitive levels must be considered to effectively plan, implement, and apply appropriate strategies. It is a must to understand the learning styles, disabilities, and cultural diversities of each student. All this needs to be considered when writing goals and objectives while developing an IEP. Accurate assessment of the students’ understanding of the course content is important. Progress monitoring of goals and objects helps keep track of what skills are mastered, needs more work, or should be changed. This is beneficial to the student, educators, parents/guardians, and all those involved in the learning process and success of the student.
Acquiring an efficient understanding with cooperation and collaboration at the table while planning helps develop effective strategies to accommodate individual preferences, engage diverse learners, and establish a respect for differing perspectives of education.
